Friday 26th December 2014 –hike **** Les Gets – sunny periods

We started the day lying in bed eating home made fudge again :) Went up to the chalet after breakfast and had a chat with everyone, some went skiing, some stayed in. Marilyn even worse today and we hardly saw her. They just watched English tv in the other lounge. Rob Mag and I went in the van to Lac Montriond which was frozen solid. As soon as we arrived in the car park we realised it is where we sat and ate a rotisserie chicken for lunch when the boys were small and we also visited it on a bike ride on the same holiday. We walked round and had great fun skimming rocks and ice on the frozen surface and watching water bubble up underneath and move under the ice till it found a way out:) It was very cold! We were absolutely amazed to see some divers walking out onto the ice and diving down into four holes cut into the surface!!! Madness! We relived old times by having spam and egg with French bread in the van with the diesel heater on! Drove up the road a bit further to the small village of Les Linderettes where there is a big car park and a lift up to Avoriaz. We got out here and had a short walk to a brilliant water fall with a bridge over the very top so you could look how far down it fell. Back through Morzine to Les Gets and the chalet. It is our turn for dinner tonight so we prepared tarteflette (and even used the proper Reblochon cheese). It was delicious as usual and was ready on time with lots to go round. We have even got left overs for the van:) We had bought Dannette pots for dessert with posh choc chip biscuits dad and Shirley gave us from the co-op. Played games tonight and the lads joined in to which was nice.

Saturday 27th December 2014 – hike * Les Gets – loads of snow!!!

You couldn’t make it up – there is so much snow today it is ridiculous. Just when everyone is going home!! What a heartbreaking shame:( Hannah’s Mum is a bit better and her Dad and family left really early although it took them hours to get to the motorway. We laid in eating fudge and reading and the snow plough came down our little lane and cleared the road. We went up to the chalet where they were all sorting out and clearing up. Had a chat then I went and got Robs van cleared and near the entrance ready to load up. We put his snow chains on without any problem. Elaine and Hannah were skiing down one run to take their skis back to the inter sport so when they were all ready they went off and we said goodbye to Rob. Martin and Will went out and used the sledges the owner leaves in the garage and were sledging while I went to move the van into the position in front of the garage to put our snow chains on. Catastrophe! I reversed a little bit too much and slipped down a bank which was obscured by snow the plough had piled at the side of the road! Will and Martin tried to push me out but without the snow chains it wasn’t happening! I put the snow chains on and they pushed and it came out but the snow chains broke which meant that we were stuck at the bottom of the steep lane! The snow shows no signs of stopping and is very thick on the road again. The ski bus seemed to have disappeared and we rang rob to see if he was in a position to come back and get us but he had got stuck in the enormous traffic jam that is Les Gets on a Saturday morning and hadn’t even made it to the inter sport to meet the girls!! We walked down the hill into town and it didn’t take as long as we expected. In fact we decided to see if we could see them at the inter sport and Hannah and Elaine were in the shop which had just had a power cut and couldn’t take their card to pay for the ski hire!!! The door only opened a foot to slip through too as it is an electric door!!! Rob came in shortly after us having left the van on a garage forecourt! We said our goodbyes again as they went off to find an atm to pay for the skis in cash! We walked to the garage shown on the town map and bought a pair of heavy duty snow chains (Thule!!!) for the van and they were really expensive at 186 euros but we think all the ones we have had before haven’t been man enough and probably didn’t fit properly anyway!! We also bought a fold up shovel! Stopped at the bread shop for bread and an almond croissant and walked back up the hill. I put the snow chains on and Mag went and said goodbye (again!!) to Marilyn Martin and the boys who were wondering if their transfer back to Geneva airport was actually going to get them there for a 7pm flight back to Bristol! They were due to be picked up at 3.30. The chalet was very unusual in that they let you stay until 4 and also had a strange policy of the people leaving cleaning the chalet for the new people coming in. Not so different in that we have always cleaned the chalet but it is usually checked by the landlord or an agent. If you had a load of messy people who didn’t care the new people would find a hell of a mess! The British owner doesn’t seem to get involved at all and even sends the key to you by post in the UK! Anyway, we left there and got out of the steep drive fine with our new chains even though I didn’t think that they were tight enough. Decided to avoid going down into the snarled up town and instead went up the road (which was steep and snow covered!) to Les Chavannes where we walked with Rob and where I skied on Christmas day. We drove in and round then dived into the only parking place we saw and stopped for the night! We definitely weren’t going to try and manoeuvre around a look for something else! We could see people skiing and a lift attendant making his drag lift ready for tomorrow. We are hoping to ski or racquette here tomorrow but are both a bit down really. It is such a shame for the others especially rob and Hannah. They were going to stay on a few days and have a go at cross country skiing and were looking forward to the laugh but with the lack of snow they lost the will and rob’s knee wouldn’t have let him do it (although it doesn’t seem too bad in general but not up to anything like that). They can’t stay in the van for very long in the cold temperatures we have got up here now:( Too much too late. They left when they paid for the skis and were still only 5 miles out of Les Gets when we were driving away from the chalet. We got a text about 11 to say they were parked up near Dijon so they have got away from the area even if it took a while!!
